Myotherapist in Hallam, Victoria: Unraveling the Marvels of Myotherapy
WHAT IS THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM?
The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory and immune system and is the first line of defence against disease and infection. The lymphatic vessels transfer the lymph fluid around the body and through the nodes thus removing toxins, dead cells, bacteria and excess fluid.
MLD is a technique that uses light pressure directional strokes to assist in the natural flow and removal of waste and toxins in the lymphatic system in a more productive and effective way. Acting like a “pump” in the lymphatic system.
REASONS FOR A SLUGGISH LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Lack of exercise – the lymphatic system does not have its own “pump” like the circulatory system and hence relies on movement to move fluid around the body.
Stress – stress can slow down the lymphatic system and lower our immunity.
Age – as we get older our lymphatic system slows down.
Poor diet – foods high in fat and sugar affect the lymphatic system

BENEFITS OF MLD
Reduce swelling/oedema – MLD assists with the drainage of fluid from swollen areas, removes blockages that may be disabling lymph flow and eliminates toxins from the affected areas. It also aids with fluid retention particularly around joint and extremities.
Enhance immune system – MLD supports the removal of congestion, chronic bacteria and viruses and expands the production of antibodies.
Pain reduction – MLD helps to calm the nervous system hence relieving or reducing pain.
Pregnancy (during & after)– fluid retention usually comes with pregnancy. MLD can improve comfort level particularly in the lower leg areas. May also help with breast feeding where there are blocked ducts and painful tight breasts.
Detox – MLD ‘pumps’ the toxins & pollutants through the lymph nodes and out of the body. This in turn takes the pressure off the liver, kidneys and other organs.
Promote healing – the tissues may be swollen and sore during pre/post-surgery or injury. MLD will aid in draining the tissue, reduce inflammation and improve healing.
Headache – headaches that are related to sinus have a component of congestion which may respond well to lymphatic drainage. MLD will aid with decongestion, blocked fluid and improve blood flow thereby reducing pain and discomfort.

Types of myotherapy treatments
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
MLD is a technique that uses light pressure directional strokes to assist in the natural flow and removal of waste and toxins in the lymphatic system in a more productive and effective way.
Taping for pain
Kinesiology tape is applied to various parts of the body to provide support, reduce pain & swelling and enhance performance. It can also be used to help stabilise injured or painful joints.
MET
Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a manual therapy that involves the use of gentle muscle contractions in which the patient activates a specific muscle or group of muscles in a certain direction against a precise resistance provided by the therapist. It aids in relieving muscle spasm, strengthen weak muscles and restore range of motion.
Joint Mobilisation
This involves gentle oscillations of the joint to improve range of movement and decrease pain.
Cupping
Cupping is an ancient technique used to encourage blood flow to the area to increase healing and reduce muscle tension. A slight vacuum is produced in the cups which draws the skin up. There will be marks left on the skin which will subside over a few days.
Soft tissue treatment
This includes a range of soft tissue techniques such as myofascial release, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and stripping to help break down restricted tissues to enhance mobility and reduce pain.
Hot/Cold Therapies
Incorporating ice therapy in your treatment can reduce swelling, inflammation and reduce acute pain. Heat therapy encourages circulation and blood flow which in turn reduces healing time, soothe discomfort and increase muscle flexibility.
Manual Dry Needling
This technique uses microscopic needles which are inserted into taut bands of muscle or connective tissues that may be contributing to pain and restricted movement. The purpose of MDN is to decrease local/referred pain by targeting trigger points and in turn restoring neuromuscular function.
Electrotherapies
This technique uses an electrical device that sends electrical impulses across the skin to stimulate the nerves and assist to manage muscle weakness, swelling and mid-acute to chronic pain.
Stretching
Assisted stretching may be incorporated in your overall treatment plan to increase flexibility in the muscles which help maintain mobility in the joints and reduce stiffness.
Exercise Prescription
This is a tailored program for the individual which helps identify areas required to assist in your rehabilitation. For example, your Myotherapist may identify an area of weakness in which an exercise plan is devised to help strengthen that area to restore function.
