What to expect during your massage treatment

Myotherapy involves an extensive physical evaluation and an integrated therapeutic approach in the treatment of affected muscles, joints and nerves. For this reason initial consultations are 60 minutes in duration.

A typical initial consultation will commence with a thorough intake of client medical history and symptoms, followed by a postural assessment.

A range of tests are then conducted on targeted muscles, joints and nerves based on the presenting symptoms. This is done in conjunction with manual palpation of muscles and joints.

This extensive evaluation helps your myotherapist to identify the root cause of your condition and allow them to form an effective treatment plan. Your treatment plan will include some of these treatment techniques.

Depending on your medical condition, you may be referred to another healthcare professional for further diagnosis or treatment.

Types of myotherapy treatments

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a technique that uses light pressure directional strokes to assist in the natural flow and removal of waste and toxins in the lymphatic system in a more productive and effective way.

  • Taping for pain

Kinesiology tape is applied to various parts of the body to provide support, reduce pain & swelling and enhance performance. It can also be used to help stabilise injured or painful joints.

  • MET

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a manual therapy that involves the use of gentle muscle contractions in which the patient activates a specific muscle or group of muscles in a certain direction against a precise resistance provided by the therapist. It aids in relieving muscle spasm, strengthen weak muscles and restore range of motion.

  • Joint Mobilisation
This involves gentle oscillations of the joint to improve range of movement and decrease pain.
  • Cupping

Cupping is an ancient technique used to encourage blood flow to the area to increase healing and reduce muscle tension. A slight vacuum is produced in the cups which draws the skin up. There will be marks left on the skin which will subside over a few days.

  • Soft tissue treatment
This includes a range of soft tissue techniques such as myofascial release, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and stripping to help break down restricted tissues to enhance mobility and reduce pain.
  • Hot/Cold Therapies
Incorporating ice therapy in your treatment can reduce swelling, inflammation and reduce acute pain. Heat therapy encourages circulation and blood flow which in turn reduces healing time, soothe discomfort and increase muscle flexibility.
  • Manual Dry Needling
This technique uses microscopic needles which are inserted into taut bands of muscle or connective tissues that may be contributing to pain and restricted movement. The purpose of MDN is to decrease local/referred pain by targeting trigger points and in turn restoring neuromuscular function.
  • Electrotherapies
This technique uses an electrical device that sends electrical impulses across the skin to stimulate the nerves and assist to manage muscle weakness, swelling and mid-acute to chronic pain.
  • Stretching
Assisted stretching may be incorporated in your overall treatment plan to increase flexibility in the muscles which help maintain mobility in the joints and reduce stiffness.
  • Exercise Prescription
This is a tailored program for the individual which helps identify areas required to assist in your rehabilitation. For example, your Myotherapist may identify an area of weakness in which an exercise plan is devised to help strengthen that area to restore function.
